What the Vallée de Joux is to watches, Takayama is to chasen.

For over 500 years, Japan's finest matcha whisks have been made in Takayama (Nara) – still by hand today, from a single piece of bamboo, using only a knife. Over 90% of Japanese chasen come from here.

This Hyappondate (百本立) with 100 tines whips up a particularly fine, dense, and creamy froth – ideal for Usucha and Matcha Latte. Chasen with so many tines were once reserved for princes.

Why Takayama?

  • Seal of authenticity – officially recognized traditional craft (伝統工芸品)
  • Aged bamboo – traditionally stored for years, making it elastic and durable
  • Paper-thin tines – shaved by hand, soft and flexible
  • No copy – the precision you cannot see, but can taste in every cup

The ritual begins

Soak the tines in warm water for about 5 minutes before first use. After each preparation, rinse with lukewarm water – without detergent – and let dry in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Ideal on a chasen holder (Kusenaoshi).
